Rachael, owner of The Foundry, opened a non-tox store in The Foundry's old space on broadway.
Here is my story...
My non-tox journey started about 5 years ago. I had a new Maker, we call her Oily Kelly, who was big into essential oils and she wanted to host her first workshop at the store. Her workshop educated people on the power of essential oils and was filled with personal testimony that followed her health journey and the issues she was facing as she got older. As I do with all new Makers, I attended her first couple workshops.
Now let me interject here...
I hate smells! Everything gives me headaches. Laughing gave me headaches. Chronic headaches were just a part of my everyday life and I figured that's what ibuprofen was for. If my headaches got really bad, I would make a pill cocktail that consisted of popping ibuprofen + tylenol at the same time. To say I was leery of attending this workshop, with essential oil smells wafting through the air, was an understatement. But I am all about supporting my team, so I attended.
At this workshop, everyone did a zyto scan with biofeedback. It was something close to that anyways...it's been a while. Basically, you place your hand on a machine and it "supposedly" lists all the things in your body that are out of alignment. It listed essential oils that will assist me with getting back in alignment, so that my body can function more effectively.
Ya'll!! This workshop changed my life.
This machine referenced issues I was having that I never told anyone about. We all got a laugh when my scan recommended an oil for 'pregnant women". I was not pregnant and thought clearly this machine thing was a hoax. Upon further research into this particular recommended oil, it turns out that it is very helpful for people with skin issues. Oh man! That was me. I have had issues with eczema, dry, chapped skin and rough patches my whole life. I could tell traumatizing stories about my youth, but I'll save that for another time.
As we sat around the table, Oily Kelly would review our results one by one. She could see that some women had tummy issues that affected them everyday. Some women had trauma and were holding onto their past. Some women had bad energy and were attracting bad habits and/or people. I think almost everyone was in tears at this workshop as it revealed things that we suppressed.
That day, I ordered all the oils that were recommended to me. I sampled tea that had essential oils in it. I made rollerballs to take home for headaches. And you know what, I didn't have a headache at that workshop.
As time has gone on, I've made small swaps towards more clean, non-toxic products. My journey started with rollerballs and diffusers. Eventually it evolved into household cleaning products, soaps, skin care, deodorant and so on.
Now let me just get this out there...
I am not perfect. I will never claim to be.
Life is fast-paced and sometimes convenience outweighs my desire for low-waste.
I have a family and sometimes they resist change no matter how much I preach that this "item" is better for them.
I am a small business owner and sometime I have to buy online for what my business needs.
And that is okay!!
It is okay because I am trying to do better.
It is okay because I am being authentic + honest about my own journey.
It is ok because this is not a quick fix. Anything we want to sustain long-term rarely is.
It is ok because good things take time + I am doing my part.
I am making decisions daily that I have never considered before.
I am making progress.
I invite you join me, no matter where you are in your own journey.
Let's grow this community in our own town.
Let's support each other + help our friends down their paths.
You are welcome here (but only if you are nice)!
Rachael
